Brooklyn brawl leaves man dead
A BROOKLYN man armed with a bat survived a bullet wound to his chest in a wild street fight that left a gun-toting combatant dead.
Valentin Cruz, 20, emerged with two friends from a van that screeched to a halt in Williamsburg during the Wednesday lunch-hour confrontation, police sources said. They said the trio squared off with Bruce Arroyo, 21, and Jason Ortiz, 19.
Arroyo grabbed a baseball bat and slugged Cruz in the head, and Cruz pulled out a gun and shot Arroyo in the chest and Ortiz in the back, sources said.
The bleeding Ortiz produced his own weapon and fired back, hitting Cruz multiple times in the head and chest. When the mortally wounded Cruz dropped his gun, one of his pals grabbed the weapon and kept shooting, sources said.
Cruz’s pals took off, leaving him to die at the chaotic crime scene at Hewes and South Third Sts. littered with shell casings.
Charges were pending against Arroyo, who staggered into the 90th Precinct stationhouse after the shooting, and Ortiz, who drove himself to Woodhull Medical Center for treatment.
