80-game suspension for violating baseball’s joint drug agreement — are over.
The Bronx is i n full-fledged Gleybermania mode.
Unfortunately, a matchup between Torres and two-way rookie phenom Shohei Ohtani Sunday in the Bronx is off as the Angels have pushed their young star back. The duo could end up finishing 1-2 for AL Rookie of the Year honors — the guy the Yankees couldn’t acquire this offseason versus the guy Brian Cashman smartly acquired after sending Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs in a 2016 blockbuster deal.
Ohtani already has six homers — including a breathtaking bomb off Luis Severino in Anaheim — and a .946 OPS, along with a 4-1 record and a 3.35 ERA. So Torres stepping into the batter’s box and facing Ohtani’s tripledigit heat would have been something to see.
But pressure certainly hasn’t fazed Torres so far, as evidenced by his walk-off, three-run shot against the Indians at home and his gametying, two-run single against the Astros on the road. And he’s under team control for the next seven years, too.
Like the scout predicted, Gleyber Torres is in fact the star everyone talks about. He’s that good.
