Tampa’s Snell stifles Bosox, avoids sweep

Blake Snell threw six scoreless innings, Wilson Ramos drove in two runs, and the Tampa Bay Rays avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Boston Red Sox, 6-3, on Thursday night.

Snell (6-3) allowed three hits, walked two and struck out eight. The left-hander is 2-0 in three starts against Boston this season, giving up two runs and 11 hits in 19 innings.

Mitch Moreland hit a solo homer and Rafael Devers had an RBI double off Matt Andriese in the ninth as Boston got within three runs. But, Alex Colome retired Sandy Leon on a two-out grounder with Devers on second to get his 11th save.… 2B Dustin Pedroia will be activated by the Red Sox on Friday after missing Boston’s first 50 games while recovering from knee surgery. Pedroia’s return will come exactly seven months after cartilage-restoratio­n surgery on his left knee.

l Charlie Morton remains undefeated this season with six solid innings, Alex Bregman and Jake Marisnick hit three-run homers and the Houston Astros defeated the host Cleveland Indians, 8-2. Morton allowed two runs and five hits while extending his winning streak to 10 games.

l Dylan Bundy struck out a career-high 14 and pitched a twohitter for his second complete game in the majors, leading the visiting Baltimore Orioles over the Chicago White Sox 9-3.

l Stephen Piscotty and the Athletics tagged Felix Hernandez early, and host Oakland ended the Seattle Mariners’ fivegame winning streak with a 4-3 victory.

l Mike Trout and Albert Pujols each hit solo home runs, Shohei Ohtani doubled twice and the visiting Los Angeles Angels beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-1.

l Danny Duffy took a shutout into the eighth, Salvador Perez drove in four runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Texas Rangers, 8-2, for their seasonbest third straight victory.

l White Sox catcher Welington Castillo was suspended 80 games by MLB for using Erythropoi­etin (EPO).

A New Jersey horse racing associatio­n has sued the four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA over what it says is more than $130 million in lost sports betting revenue.

The suit filed Thursday in federal court claims the leagues acted in bad faith when they got a restrainin­g order in 2014 to block Monmouth Park Racetrack from offering sports betting.

The suit claims Monmouth Park would’ve made $139 million in revenue between November 2014 and this month.
