YANKGAMEDAY

-

Memorial Day Weekend is now Gleyber Day Weekend. Gleyber Torres, the Yankees’ 21-year-old phenom, homered in his fourth straight game Friday night at the Stadium to propel the Bombers to a 2-1 victory over the Angels.

Torres broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh, lining a fastball into the right-field seats. He also delivered the first RBI of the game on an infield single in the opening inning, beating out a sharp ground ball down the third-base line.

The Angels showcased their own youngster in two-way star Shohei Ohtani, the 23-year-old from Japan who started as the designated hitter and hit fifth. Ohtani, whose every move was logged by a mass of video cameras and photographers during pregame batting practice, went 0-for-3 with a walk.

Luis Severino started for the Yankees and allowed one earned run in six innings. The righthander’s lone blemish was a solo home run allowed to perennial MVP candidate Mike Trout in the fifth, which tied the game. Severino tried to beat Trout with a 99-mph fastball high and outside. Trout poked it the opposite way, tucking it inside the flag pole and into the upper deck.

Andrew Heaney allowed just four hits and one run before leaving with one out in the bottom of the seventh, two batters before Torres’ decisive blast.
