FBI big dies of 9/11-linked ills
SAM The great Memorial Day return will start in the afternoon if Monday’s cloudy weather forecast holds, stretching out the traffic over a longer period. A sunny day will entice people to delay the trip back, causing a crunch from 7 to 10 p.m. to the NJ Turnpike, the GCP, Belt, Van Wyck, Lincoln and Holland tunnels.
The Yanks play the Astros 1 p.m. Monday, adding to the holiday rush on the Deegan, Cross Bronx and Bruckner as the game ends around 4 p.m. The world champs are also at Yankee Stadium Tuesday at 7 p.m., Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., and the Angels are there today at 1 p.m. The D train is not running below 59th St. Sunday and Monday, switching to the A and F tracks.
The other weekdays, Brooklyn’s Third Ave. has two eastbound lanes closed 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in stretches between 21st and 42nd Sts.
In Queens, there are Monday parades on Myrtle Ave. between Cypress and Cooper Aves. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Northern Blvd. from Glenwood to 247th Sts. 2 to 5 p.m. in Little Neck and Douglaston, and Rockaway Beach Blvd. between Beach 130th and Beach 94th Sts. 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A festival closes Queens’ Broadway between Crescent and 47th Sts. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. THE HEAD of the FBI’s Atlanta office died Saturday from unspecified complications linked to his weeks working on the toxic World Trade Center site after 9/11.
David LeValley, who joined the Atlanta office in September 2016, became the latest victim of the 2001 terrorist attack in lower Manhattan, according to the FBI.
The veteran federal agent (photo inset) spent several weeks among the smoldering ruins of the twin towers, with his death “in the line of duty as a direct result of his work,” read an FBI statement.
LeValley joined the FBI in New York in 1996, initially investigating drug trafficking from the Caribbean and Colombia. He held positions in the Criminal Investigative Division and the Washington field office before transferring to Atlanta.
“LeValley’s death is a great loss to the entire FBI, but particularly to his family, the FBI Atlanta division and the Atlanta community,” the FBI said.
“We are honored to have served beside him and are grateful for his leadership and sacrifice.”
As of last September, the FDNY reported 159 of its members had died of 9/11-related ailments. The NYPD reported 24 Trade Center-linked deaths among its ranks last year alone.
