YANK GAME DAY

- By JUSTIN TASCH

They were staked to an early lead, but Yankee pitchers made a glorious mess of it.

It started with a brutal outing by Sonny Gray, and it continued with the bullpen allowing six runs as Mike Trout and the Angels dealt the Yankees an 11-4 setback Saturday night in the Bronx. Trout went 5-for-5, the five hits a career high, and registered his first career game with four extra-base hits.

Clearly it doesn’t matter who’s catching Gray anymore; Austin Romine was behind the plate Saturday, but Gray still allowed five runs in 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits and three walks while striking out seven. He was unable to build off his eight-inning, one-run effort from last weekend, and his ERA through 10 starts stands at 5.98.

After Jonathan Holder pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, Tommy Kahnle allowed four runs (two earned) in his first appearance since April 12 after coming off the DL Friday from shoulder and biceps tendinitis; he has a 7.88 ERA through seven appearances.

Chasen Shreve then came in and served up a two-run homer to Jose Briceño in the seventh.

An RBI double by Trout gave the Angels a lead in the first, but back-to-back homers in the bottom half by Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge gave the Yankees (32-16) a 2-1 lead. Romine’s two-run homer in the second gave them a three-run cushion.
