KICKING THE KAHN’
Reliever Tommy Kahnle also didn’t fare well in his first appearance since April 12 following a six-week DL stint. He was tagged for four runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks in the sixth, aided by an error by second baseman Gleyber Torres.
“I thought he looked OK…We had a chance maybe to turn a double play and it kind of gets away,” Aaron Boone said. “But hopefully getting his feet wet again and back into the mix, and hopefully this is the start of him getting going.”
WHAT THE ELLS?
It doesn’t sound like GM Brian Cashman is expecting injured Jacoby Ellsbury to return anytime soon. The $153 million outfielder has been stalled by various injuries and ailments since spring training, most recently being shut down from baseball activities because of a back issue.
Asked if he expects Ellsbury to play this season, Cashman responded: “It’s been that way, but everything that he’s got has been diagnosed legitimately by a doctor. It’s frustrating, without question. But it’s also, upon diagnosis, a future expectation of return to play. He just keeps kicking the can down the road, because he’s had a series of different circumstances that stalled his rehab. That’s unique. But every case, the expectation is at some point he’ll push himself back in the mix.”
NO ROOM FOR HANLEY
Cashman didn’t speak about Hanley Ramirez being designated for assignment from Boston, but noted “our roster’s pretty jammed up as we’re sending quality players to Triple-A, so we’re hard-pressed for room for another position player.”
