Through the end of April, there were 51 traffic fatalities citywide. Of those deaths, 32 were pedestrians, 14 were motorists and five were cyclists, based on Vision Zero data.
In 2017, 222 people were killed in collisions —a 4% drop from the previous year, when there were 231.
Traffic deaths have steadily decreased throughout the five boroughs, and last year marked the fourth consecutive year street deaths have declined.
Mayor de Blasio has aggressively pursued the Vision Zero mission, implementing various strategies to make the streets safer, such as lower speed limits, more red light cameras and more protected bike lanes.
