Venus stunned at French Open

Venus Williams lost her opening match as play began Sunday at the French Open, The ninth seed bowed out in her 21st appearance at Roland Garros, beaten 6-4, 7-5 by 85th-ranked Wang Qiang of China after making 21 more unforceed effors than her opponent. That follows an equally abrupt exit for the 37-year-old American at the Australian Open in January .

Also upset was the dcfending women’s champion and fifth-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, whose high-risk game resulted in 48 unforced errors to only 22 winners as she lost to 67th-ranked Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine 7-5, 6-3.

ROSE BLOOMS

Justin Rose closed with a 6-under 64 and finished at 20 under 260 at Colonial for a three-stroke victory over U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka in the Fort Worth Invitation­al. Rose won for the ninth time on the PGA Tour and became the fifth player with multiple victories this season. Rose also won the HSBC Champions in Shanghai in the fall.

The 37-year-old from England earned $1,278,000 and a plaid jacket for winning at Hogan’s Alley. He moves to No. 3 in the world. Koepka shot 63, but started the day four strokes behind Rose in the final group. l In Virginia Water, England, Francesco Molinari completed a bogey-free weekend at Wentworth Club and closed with a 4-under 68—271 to win the BMW PGA Championsh­ip by two shots over Rory McIlroy (70) in a duel that never developed.
