GOP rep out of race over booze woe

- Nicole Hensley

A VIRGINIA congressman under fire for reportedly forcing staff to run errands and clean up dog poop said Monday he is an alcoholic and will not seek reelection.

Rep. Tom Garrett, 46, called it quits on his cashstrapped bid for a second House term, saying he will focus on his family and his struggle with alcoholism.

The Republican and Freedom Caucus member denied a Politico report Friday that he and his wife made staffers drive his daughter to school and clean up after the family dog. Garrett slammed the report as “half truths and lies” in a video statement provided to The Washington Post.

“These attacks aren’t true, and I can prove that,” he said, without elaborating.

He then revealed his drinking problem and decision to withdraw from the race.

“Life is about priorities and values. And for the most part I am proud of mine. There is one area that I haven’t been honest,” he said. “I am a good man, and I am an alcoholic.”
