Fam grief-stricken after burglar takes pooch

A BROOKLYN family is devastated after a bad-to-the-bone burglar broke into their home and stole their prized pooch Zoey.

The Mayne family was visiting relatives in Georgia when they learned a canine crook had made off with their beloved 12-year-old mutt and a $2,700 folding bike.

“I could care less about the bike,” Chris Mayne, 44, said Wednesday, noting that it’s covered by insurance.

The Park Slope man has been posting flyers all over his neighborhood since Sunday when he and his family cut short their vacation to return home to search for Zoey (photo).

“It’s devastating,” said Mayne, who has a 2-year-old daughter.

“I’m trying to be the solid rock that my wife can lean on. She’s just a mess. We’ve been married 13 years, together for 17. I’ve never seen her this upset and depressed.”

Zoey was just a puppy when the Maynes adopted her 11 years ago from a shelter in Oregon, where they were living at the time.

The family was enjoying their vacation down South until last Saturday night when their dog walker called to report that there was no sign of Zoey in their second-floor apartment on Union St.

After rushing back to Brooklyn, the Maynes immediately spotted signs of forced entry through one of their front windows.

The screen was pulled up — and muddy footprints covered the floor, Chris Mayne said.

In addition to swiping Zoey, the thief stole Mayne’s bright orange Brompton folding bike and about $20 in change.

But the burglar apparently overlooked the family’s other dog, an aging and sickly terrier mix named Vincent, who rarely leaves the bathroom.

The Maynes are offering a $1,000 reward for the return of their pooch.

“No questions asked,” Mayne said. “We just want the dog back. They can go their way, and we can get back to our lives. That’s all we want.”
