Embiid, GM in Twitter oddity

- BY ARI GILBERG

JOEL Embiid appears to be processing the latest drama surrounding the 76ers pretty well.

Embiid “liked” all the hate tweets bashing him that were sent from one of 76ers GM Bryan Colangelo’s alleged burner accounts Tuesday night.

Embiid’s trolling passive-aggressive response came only minutes after sports and pop culture website The Ringer linked Colangelo to five fake Twitter accounts that were used to frequently bash former Sixers GM Sam Hinkie, criticize current and former Sixers players — including Embiid, Markelle Fultz, Jahili Okafor and Nerlens Noel — and reveal non-public medical information and front office strategy.

Despite being part of the core of the Sixers’ future and making his first All-Star appearance, Embiid was the target of several hateful tweets from the accounts allegedly run by Colangelo.

l “too bad that Embiid danced like a fool and the whole disaster happened, next time he will think twice before mocking his team”.

l “JoJo is calling the shots, he is telling docs daily how his knee feels. So blame him...”

l “alternative fact: Joel is not the future of the franchise, so who cares if he is not 100%, let’s exploit him”

Colangelo admitted that one of the five accounts mentioned in The Ringer’s report (@phila1234567) is, in fact, him, but denied having used any of the other four accounts.

The 52-year-old NBA exectuvie texted Yahoo Sports reporter Jordan Schultz Wednesday evening claiming he is the victim of a scam.

“Someone’s out to get me . ... This is clearly not me,” Colangelo reportedly said, before adding he is “hopeful to resolve this soon.”

Embiid later said he was just enjoying himself and doesn’t actually believe the story, calling the report “insane.”

“Fun night on Twitter lmao.. All jokes asides I don’t believe the story. That would just be insane,” Embiid posted to Twitter early Wednesday.

Embiid initially appeared to be in disbelief at the report. “BRUH,” the Sixers big man tweeted Tuesday night, along with an old photo of himself looking shocked.

Embiid told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that Colangelo reached out to the All-Star big man to clear the air and tell Embiid himself that those other four accounts aren’t him. Embiid told Wojnarowski he is taking Colangelo at his word, for now.

“I talked to him and he said that he didn’t say that. He called me just to deny the story,” Embiid said. “Gotta believe him until proven otherwise. If true though, that would be really bad.”

Colangelo previously released a statement addressing the matter, per The Ringer.

“This storyline is disturbing to me on many levels,” he said, “as I am not familiar with any of the other accounts that have been brought to my attention, nor do I know who is behind them or what their motives may be in using them.”

The Sixers said Wednesday that they are investigating the allegations. AP
