GARY COMES UP CLUTCH

-

If Rudy Giuliani’s calculations are correct, Giancarlo Stanton is the most beloved Yankee on the team. The former NYC mayor wasn’t upset with getting booed on his birthday in the Bronx, saying that it was a show of love rather than hate.

“I know Yankee fans,” Giuliani told reporters in the nation’s capital on Wednesday. “They boo you when they love you.”

That seems like wishful thinking from President Donald Trump’s attorney, who was booed raucously at the Stadium on Monday when his attendance was announced to the crowd.

Gary Sanchez doesn’t have a ton of hits this season, but he’s made the ones he has count.

As the DH Wednesday night, Sanchez snapped an 0-for-19 skid with a two-run single in the fifth that gave the Yankees a one-run lead after Houston had scored twice in the top half. The Yanks went on to win, 5-3, as Sanchez recorded his first RBI since May 19.

Sanchez beat a shift stacked to the left side of the infield, going the other way with an outside pitch and sending it through the vacated hole between first and second base.

“It’s obvious I don’t hit a lot of ground balls to second base, so when they shift it works against me,” Sanchez said through an interpreter. “But in that opportunity I was able to put the ball in play and put a ground ball there. Don’t get many of those. Usually if I go to that side it’s a fly ball.”

Sanchez had gone eight games without an RBI, the secondlongest such stretch of his career. He has the second-most RBI on the team with 35 but is hitting .211.

“Well, it’s the nature of a 162-game season, especially when you’re up against great pitching, if you’re not locked in or feeling great, great pitching can expose you for a couple of days,” Aaron Boone said of Sanchez.

“In a long run, he’s not gonna hit down there, he’ll get it going and take off at some point. He just hasn’t had that long stretch where he’s getting multiple hits all the time, which for a guy of his caliber, what his swing will lend itself to, those streaks will come for him.”
