High Line, meet the QueensWay

-

Manhattan: “High achievers” (May 29) describes the positive ripple effect that New York’s High Line is having in cities around the world. What the article doesn’t include is how the High Line has inspired people right here in its home city, just across the river in Queens with a project called the QueensWay. Like the High Line, the QueensWay would reuse a long-abandoned railroad right-of-way. And while it is certainly inspired by the High Line, the design may prove to be even more versatile offering central Queens a much-needed innovative modern park, double the length of the High Line.

Spanning six neighborhoods, the 31/2-mile long QueensWay will provide space for walkers, runners and bikers, serving 100,000 residents who live within a 10-minute walk. It will provide new access points to underutilized Forest Park, which is largely accessed by car. Finally, the QueensWay will incorporate new performance spaces, playgrounds and outdoor learning environments for the seven schools adjacent to the trail.

The success of rails-to-trails projects across the country is tremendously exciting. But let’s not forget about neighborhoods just a few miles away from Manhattan that are eager to mirror the success of the High Line. Carter Strickland, director, the Trust for Public Land

Respect dolphins

Norfolk, Va.: Re “Dolphins like us just fin” (May 29): Dolphins are designed to swim for long distances at great speeds. They have distinct personalities, call each other by name and can think about the future. Scientists have found that dolphins not only communicate but also speak in complete sentences and patiently wait until another completes a thought before joining the conversation. Genetic drives don’t disappear in captivity, and dolphins suffer terribly in cramped tanks. People who care about dolphins will continue to shun marine theme parks and “swim with” excursions. Right is wrong

Ramsey, N.J.: When did Voice of the People begin leaning to the right? On Thursday, three of the four featured letters were proTrump. It seems to be getting more and more unbalanced. I sent a reply to a woman who is condemning the right to free speech by the NFL players. It was not confrontational, nor insulting. It was a thoughtful, respectful reply. It was not printed. I’m not crying about it. I am upset about the Daily News’ blatant bias. Upset enough to cancel my subscription. Sherry Ahearn

‘C’ for ‘correct’

Whitestone: Samantha Bee, why are you apologizing for stating the obvious?!?! You have sorely disappointed your fans.

Decry racism

Bronx: The issue I have with the comments from Voicers Carmel Harrigan, Grace Fortnatora, Ronnie Partyka Deckert and Geri Sabia is that they just don’t get why what Roseanne did was contemptible. What she said involved the race of the person, comparing her to an ape. That is a racist and defamatory statement. When Jimmy Kimmel and Alec Baldwin make fun of Donald Trump, they’re often referring to his lack of intelligence and his inability to lead all of the American people, not just his followers.

Philinda Bell Brooklyn: To me, one of the jobs of the President of the United States is to provide comfort during a painful episode. Roseanne Barr’s despicable racist joke about a former President Obama official pained many Americans. ABC quickly canceled her show. What we needed was the President to remind us of the importance of respect and tolerance of others. Instead, what we got was an it’s-all-about-me tweet from the most powerful man in the world asking why ABC doesn’t ask for an apology from its employees who criticize him. President Trump failed miserably on this. Allen Howard

‘Roseanne’ targeted

Lynbrook, L.I.: First of all, “The View” should have been taken off the air a long time ago, as well as that no- talent Stephen Colbert, whose only claim to fame is bashing the President. That also goes for Alec Baldwin, who should be seen and not heard. I also believe that “Roseanne” was canceled because Roseanne Barr is a Trump supporter, and not because of what she said. I guess it is OK to bash the President with no consequences. What hypocrites, especially ABC.

Offense atop offense

Staten Island: I was completely offended by the swastika on your May 30 front page (“She-Devil”). Six million Jews died because of that symbol you printed. You were completely insensitive to your Jewish readers. Ironically, do I need to point out to you that would not print the nickname of the NFL team in Washington, D.C., if I typed it here. That’s because you are sensitive to Native Americans. That’s a double standard if I ever saw one! Without an apology, my long subscription will be over.

Still agree?

Manhattan: I am eager to read the Daily News editorial the day after some brave NFL player takes a knee to protest Israel’s dispossession and abject mistreat of the Palestinians. It’s going to be quite a humdinger, I’m sure.Steven Sica

What have we become?

Manhattan: I cannot believe Voicer Lou Pini’s statement regarding the Hasids and Aaron Schlossberg. I can only relate it to the anti-Semitic remarks made by one passenger to another on the subway Thursday morning. What is going on? It used to be unacceptable to demean people because of their race or religion. Does anything go in this age of Trump? Marilyn Levin

Keep best schools at the top

Brooklyn: I do not subscribe to the lowest-common-denominator

DLANDSTUDIO ARCHITECTURE & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE/WXY ARCHITECT theory put forward by United us all to his horrible, greedy Federation of Teachers President nature and deeply flawed character Michael Mulgrew, requiring in regard to what patriotism mandated integration (“Diversify consists of for him: cashing in. N.Y. high schools now,” May 31). “Happy Memorial Day,” the Our future leaders arise from the ignoramus tweeted along with the successful gifted-and-talented added bonus that if you chose to students of our public schools. make a donation towards his Opportunities must be given to 2020 reelection campaign (God the brightest students of all religious, help us!) you would receive a 25% ethnic and racial backgrounds off discount in honor of our fallen to go beyond our less military members for cheesy demanding high school curriculum, MAGA hats and other crappy and pursue excellence and merchandise he still has made in their dreams. Deserving of honor

Manhattan: Wednesday’s announcement and the expanded scope of the 9/11 Memorial are a welcome recognition of the ever-expanding wave of victims exposed to deadly toxins emitted due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Providing legal representation to people with related medical conditions, each day we see firsthand the toll that 9/11 has taken, as more and more New Yorkers who lived and worked near the World Trade Center fall ill. We hope that the new addition to the memorial will help ensure that the public is aware of the magnitude of the suffering created in the aftermath of 9/11 and further educate the affected victims about their rights and eligibility for benefits through the Victim Compensation Fund. Unfit for duty

Manhattan: Re “That’s quite a unit” (May 29): I think it’s disgusting that these four female cops took a picture with this 99% naked male stripper! They’re paid by the taxpayers to keep the peace, not to get a piece! Have a party on your own time, girls. It was very inappropriate to take this picture and shows what bad cops they are. I never liked female cops, anyway. They don’t look as good as male cops and they have always been unfair to me in Times Square. It’s like they’re trying to be fearless men, but they are not. I hope they are put on desk duty or fired for their inappropriate behavior. Sandy Kane

Losing it

Scarsdale, N.Y.: The Red Sox had the curse of the Bambino. The Cubs had the Billy Goat curse. Now the Mets and their owners seem to have the Curse of the Madoff. Harvey Wielstein
