Two bad! Yet another double-header ahead

- BY MIKE MAZZEO

BALTIMORE — Not again.

Thursday’s Yankees-Orioles game was postponed due to rain and will be rescheduled as part of a July 9 single admission doubleheader that begins at 4:05 p.m.

“Sadly, we’re used to it, I guess,” Aaron Boone said. “It is what it is. We’ll try and make the best of it, and just be ready to go tomorrow.”

Sonny Gray will start Friday, Masahiro Tanaka Saturday and Domingo German will take the mound Sunday.

The forecast also calls for rain Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Baltimore, so there could be more weather problems to come.

The Bombers are already slated to play a doubleheader on Monday in Detroit. They will also play a pair in Washington on June 18 — the first of which will be the resumption of a suspended game, which is tied 3-3, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

OFF DAY

The Yankees wouldn’t have had Gary Sanchez or Miguel Andujar in their lineup on Thursday night against the Orioles.

Aaron Boone had wanted to give Sanchez a day and a half off. Sanchez DH’d on Wednesday, with Austin Romine catching Luis Severino. Romine was also slated to catch Sonny Gray, as usual, on Thursday.

Sanchez had also been dealing with some calf cramping recently and has been struggling at the plate. He snapped an 0-for-19 skid with a two-run single on Wednesday.

“He’s been doing really well,” Boone said of Sanchez’s health. “He’s been receiving treatment and stuff but he’s been catching and catching really well, so I think he’s doing well it’s just with this stretch of games that we’re in just wanting to be mindful (of resting him).”

Neil Walker was going to start at third for Andujar, who was involved in a collision with Yuli Gurriel as he was trying to field a ball at the hot corner in Wednesday’s game.

Andujar is hitting .290 with five homers and 18 RBI.

WARREN REPORT

Adam Warren (back) threw three innings and over 40 pitches for Double-A Trenton on Wednesday night. Warren was in the Yankees’ clubhouse on Thursday, but there’s still no timetable for him to come off the disabled list. Boone had said it was unlikely Warren would return during the Orioles’ series.

Boone did say Warren could be a possibility for Monday’s doubleheader in Detroit, though the manager essentially ruled out the idea that he could start one of the games.

David Hale pitched Wednesday for Triple-A Scranton, so he could be on turn for it. Luis Severino is on turn that day as well.

Inclement weather could become a factor, with rain forecasted in Baltimore throughout the rest of the week.

OTHER INJURY NOTES

Jordan Montgomery (elbow) is on the trip and has been increasing his throwing program, according to Boone. He’s thrown now for three or four days, but still hasn’t gotten on a mound yet.

Jacoby Ellsbury (multiple injuries) is slow moving down in Tampa but the team is hopeful he can begin baseball activities soon.

Chad Green hasn’t pitched since May 25, so Boone wants to get his righty reliever in a game soon. Green, who has a 2.42 ERA, has warmed up in some recent games only to not be used.
