Gory details in shop-cart trial

- Victoria Bekiempis

THE SON of an Upper West Side philanthropist who was braindamaged when a shopping cart was dropped on her head said Friday his mother was “covered with blood” after being hit.

Dayton Hedges was with his mom, Marion Hedges, 53, at East River Plaza mall on Oct. 30, 2011, to buy Halloween candy when two teens hurled the cart from a fourth-story walkway.

“There was a really loud bang,” said Dayton, who testified in his family’s Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit against the mall. “I saw a shopping cart over to the left. I went to pick her up – and she was just covered with blood,” said the 19-year-old, who was just 13 at the time of the incident.

Dayton said he still feels anxiety, saying it’s “something I think about a lot, whether I want to or not.

“For a while, I had nightmares and trouble sleeping,” he said. “I have panic attacks sometimes – not often, but I do,” said Dayton, who became teary during his testimony.
