Cumberbatch to rescue near Sherlock’s home
Benedict Cumberbatch saved a mugging victim near his TV character Sherlock’s fictional home on Baker Street in London. Cumberbatch, 41, was traveling with his wife Sophie in a Uber on the Marylebone Road near the corner of Baker Street in November when he and his driver saw four muggers attacking a bicycle deliveryman. The attackers hit the cyclist over the head with a wine bottle. It wasn’t clear if the wine bottle once contained the 2000 Saint Emilion that Sherlock’s brother Mycroft Holmes said he enjoyed at a nearby restaurant. “Leave him alone!” Cumberbatch (left) shouted at the attackers, according to The Sun.
Cumberbatch and his driver, Manuel Dias, pulled the men off the cyclist. “He did most of it, to be honest,” Dias told the newspaper.
“They tried to hit him, but he defended himself and pushed them away. He wasn’t injured, but I think they also recognized it was Benedict and ran away.”
Dias said the “Doctor Strange” star gave the victim a hug after the suspects fled.
Authorities confirmed the incident — details of which only emerged on Friday. The four suspects were not caught.
“Benedict was courageous, brave and selfless,” Dias added. “Here was Sherlock Holmes fighting off four attackers just round the corner from Baker Street.”
