How cops destroy public trust

-

Manhattan: I have family who are cops, and even they say the moron rent-a-thugs who beat up that girl on the Wildwood beach were completely wrong from start to finish. For instance, the cops couldn't even bother her unless they saw her holding the unopened liquor. You can’t jail an American for a crime someone else commits, and unopened booze would logically belong to her aunt in the first place.

The moment the cop heard the girl's speech was completely sober, he was blocked from even asking her to take a Breathalyzer. Clear speech is an anti-probable cause.

And after she passed it, the cop made her take it again, because he didn’t want to look like a fool and thug! After she was proven honest again, he tried yet again to bully and harass her and she called it flawlessly: He was angry he was embarrassed and was going to harass her no matter what.

She had every right to be furious and ignore his illegal commands. I didn't see once where she broke the law. The body cam footage is flawless. (No wonder cops fought like hell to never have taxpayers see what they're doing!) No American has to comply with unlawful orders by police, period. That’s the law. Don’t like it, then change the law. And if they don’t arrest this lawless cop, they are doing severe damage to all the good cops out there, like my family members. They’re getting hate thanks to all the bad cops out there, tarnishing the badge.

Little Egg Harbor, N.J.: As a resident of a town on the Jersey Shore, I know how vital it is for us to keep our beaches, restaurants and other fun activities open for summer visitors. That is why it is extremely hard for me to understand the approval given by Mayor Ernie Troiano to the policemen who throttled Emily Weinman at the beach in Wildwood. We are a group of small towns on the Atlantic Ocean who depend on our out-of-town visitors to come and enjoy our riches in order to enable our own residents to have lower taxes. That is why when I see a summer cop abuse his position and beat on a woman in front of her toddler, I am more than perturbed. The officer’s only job was not to harass the visitors to the beach, but to see to the safety of the tourists. If she did something against the rules posted at this area, his sole job is to write her a ticket, not to cause her pain and suffering for the infraction of what he perceived as her lack of respect. It is no wonder more and more citizens hate cops!

Rose Wilson Bergenfield, N.J.: As the Trump era continues to entertain supporters and detractors alike, the three big problems facing the country — Social Security, the health care system and the massive debt — are out of the news cycle. If something works, you stick with it!

Feminists today

Brooklyn: Christine Estima’s column on the acceptability of the C-word shows women today proudly celebrate their own degradation (“Tool of satire vs. big jerks,” June 1). New feminists embrace the female body-part slur as proof of how far they’ve come from the days when only men called them c--ts. Schellie Hagan

Barr vs. Bee

Forest Hills: I am disgusted with the false equivalency used by many Voicers when commenting about Roseanne Barr being fired by ABC. Barr tweeted a vile, racist remark and deserved to be fired. Comedians who make jokes about Trump are not saying anything racist or offensive. They are telling the truth about Trump’s indecency and helping us laugh at a situation that is otherwise intolerable. Libby Gurgis

Barring speech

Wantagh, L.I.: ABC should be ashamed of itself for giving Roseanne Barr the same punishment as Bill Cosby. She wanted to make amends. You can’t compare the offenses. Whatever happened to freedom of speech? With the way the world is today, much worse has been said, especially about our President. Don’t we all deserve a second chance? Joann Maginnis

Thought experiment

Brooklyn: If Roseanne Barr had said derogatory things about a black Republican instead of a black Democrat, the news media would have laughed it off as just Roseanne being Roseanne.

Thought experiment II

Sayville, L.I.: I wonder how it would have worked out if I had called the Obama daughters stuck up c--ts. I probably would have been a misogynistic racist savage

Glass houses

Manhattan: You guys at The News are comical, publishing an article written by Al Sharpton lecturing the rest of us about hate and racism (“Our fight to rid media of hate,” Op-Ed, May 30). You can’t get any funnier than that. Michael Coluccio

Seconding the motion

Brooklyn: Leave it to the Daily News to have Rev. Al Sharpton lecture us with an article on race relations in the aftermath of Roseanne’s tweets. Who’s next? Perhaps you can have Louis “The White Man is the Skunk of the Earth” Farrakhan school us on the topic of hate speech.

Make them pay

Long Island City: Gov. Cuomo says congestion pricing is the only way to fund the MTA. But there are other options that the governor himself knows well. He need only look to LaGuardia Airport. The innovative deal he spearheaded is paid for by Delta Air Lines and LaGuardia Gateway Partners in exchange for long-term exclusive management of their terminals. Why not apply this thinking to the MTA? If the MTA says it’s putting in a station, the real estate developers push zoning changes and wind up cashing in but don’t wind up putting money back in the system (like Hudson Yards or Second Ave.). The MTA should be taking a chunk of that profit. This is much better than making the middle class and small businesses pay up, which is exactly what congestion pricing does.

Perfect shot

Somerset, N.J.: Alonzo Neese’s column on why he canceled his lifetime membership in the NRA is the most convincing statement on gun control that I have read (“Enlisting veterans to fight the NRA,” Op-Ed, May 30). It should be mandatory reading for members of Congress and all other people in government including the President. Then maybe Trump will do something sensible to rid the country of the ongoing horror of schoolchildren’s deaths instead of coming up with silly ideas like arming teachers. Arthur Bressler

Kneel all you like

Brooklyn: To Voicer Kenneth Katta, who says NFL players’ kneeling is a slap in the face of all veterans. You are as delusional as the lying moron in the White House and you don't speak for all veterans. If you had ever been in a church, you would see that genuflecting and kneeling is a sign of reverence. Do you believe all those who kneel are disrespecting God? Stop drinking the Fox News Kool-Aid, pull your head out, and stop embarrassing the USAF.

Ken Ackermann, Sgt. (ret) USAF

Stealing spaces

Staten Island: I have a disability, and when I drive into a parking lot and proceed to the handicapped parking spaces, I often discover that there are cars that do not belong in these spaces. I have watched a car park in the handicap space, then seen a young person exit the car and run into the store. I want to know where the traffic agents are to enforce the laws. If you are able-bodied and take spaces that are designated for people with disabilities, I hope in the future you do not become wheelchair-dependent and discover there is a car parked in the spot that is for you.

What Rudy doesn’t know

Old Bridge, N.J.: If there were ever a man who’s is a legend in his own mind, it’s Rudolph Giuliani. He claims to “know Yankee fans,” saying that they “boo when they love you.” Please, Rudy, document for us the times Derek Jeter was booed in his entire career.
