Drug-inject sites OK by Nixon
ACTRESS Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor in the Democratic primary against Gov. Cuomo, came out Monday in support of a pilot program to allow supervised drug injection sites for addicts.
Four of the sites under the pilot program would be in New York City, and one in Ithaca.
Rather than considering drug addiction a criminal justice matter, Nixon said, the country should treat it as behavioral and public health issues.
“We need to respond to the opioid crisis in a way that is smart, effective and follows science,” she said. “That’s why I support a myriad of harm reduction approaches to addiction, including syringe exchange, medicated assisted treatment, diversion programs and safe consumption spaces.”
Mayor de Blasio earlier this year signed on to the idea of opening four injection sites in a pilot program meant to prevent overdose deaths. Gov. Cuomo has called the issue “complicated.”
