Mayor, Corey back 3rd gender option
PEOPLE BORN in New York who don’t identify as male or female would be able to change the gender on their birth certificates to a third option — “X” — under a new proposal by Mayor de Blasio and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson.
The plan would also remove the requirement for transgender New Yorkers to get a doctor to sign off to change their gender, instead letting them submit their own affidavit saying what’s on their birth certificate doesn’t match their gender identity.
“You don’t need a doctor to tell you who you are,” Johnson said at City Hall on Monday.
The changes will be introduced at the Board of Health on Tuesday and as legislation in the Council on Thursday.
