7 to 21 years for DWI driver in h’way hell
A MAN WHO killed two people and injured seven others in a horrific four-car crash on the Grand Central Parkway last summer was sentenced to up to 21 years in prison, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
Andrew Shakespeare, 34, of Roselle, N.J., pled guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide in April. He was returning home from a wedding in his BMW X5 SUV filled with passengers on July 17 when he lost control as he attempted to pass another car, sideswiping it and setting off a chainreaction crash.
Two of Shakespeare’s passengers, Akeam Grant, 16, and Layon Campbell, 34, were killed. His two other passengers were seriously injured, along with the drivers and passengers of the other cars near 188th St. in Jamaica Estates, Queens.
Shakespeare refused a blood alcohol test after the crash. When a warrant was obtained to test him hours later, his blood alcohol level was still well above the legal level.
His sentence of seven to 21 years will be followed by a fiveyear period during which any car he drives must have a device to prevent him from starting the car if he’s intoxicated.
