Hurt cabbie backs ‘panic button’ push
A CABBIE who was shot eight times in the Bronx and now walks with a cane called Wednesday for legislation that would require panic buttons in livery cars.
City Councilman Andy King said at a press conference in Baychester that he’s introducing a bill that would mandate the installation of equipment in all cars to enable drivers in jeopardy to connect with the NYPD.
King said the cabbie, Jeffrey Camacho, was fortunate that police happened to drive past after he was shot by a passenger in March.
“No longer can we tolerate the thugs, the idiots, the people who don’t understand that our taxi drivers . . . they’re the breadwinners, they’re the sole providers of families,” Democrat said. the Bronx
King added that he would back an effort by the state to make it a felony to assault a taxi driver, as is the case for transit workers.
The shooting has sidelined Camacho (photo), who needs to have two more surgeries before he can return to work. This time around, he’ll have a job as a cook, instead of driving.
A Taxi and Limousine Commission spokesman said the agency will review the bill.
