Blaz legal bailout OK is far off
MAYOR DE Blasio’s lawyers will have to keep waiting on that $300,000 bill he owes.
City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said Thursday that lawmakers are “nowhere close” to approving legislation that would allow the mayor to pass the tin cup for big donations to help cover his legal bills.
Hizzoner said this week he won’t pay the bills — racked up during an investigation of his fund-raising — until the law is changed to allow him to create a legal defense fund. A city conflicts board has ruled it’s illegal for elected officials to take donations greater than $50.
Johnson said he is open to changing the law, but is not in any hurry — despite a personal plea from the mayor.
“There is no agreement on a bill. There’s been no bill that’s been introduced,” Johnson told reporters at City Hall. “There’s nothing happening any time soon.”
De Blasio has already used $2.6 million in taxpayer money to pay the bulk of his bills to Kramer Levin Natalis & Frankel LLP — despite previously pledging he would cover the fees himself. But he’s legally barred from having taxpayers pick up the tab for the remaining $300,000 because it’s related to campaign activity, not his official job.
De Blasio owes the firm for its work defending him during state and federal investigations. No one was charged.
