Kennels for every boro
THE CITY will be required to have animal shelters in all five boroughs under a bill passed Thursday by the City Council.
Queens and the Bronx currently lack full service shelters, but they’ll have to be built and opened by 2024 under terms of the legislation, which is expected to be signed by the mayor.
Animal advocates have long pushed for the Bronx and Queens to get shelters.
“Only one option is acceptable for this city and the residents of Queens and the Bronx — a fully functional animal shelter with adoption, veterinary and education services,” said Councilman Paul Vallone (DQueens), who sponsored the measure.
“Having animal shelters in every borough reflects our belief that all animals should be protected and given the opportunity to find a home.”
A site has already been identified for a shelter in the Bronx but not in Queens, Vallone said.
