Many still Access a poor ride

-

Rockaway Beach: A once-in-a-while good experience with Access-A-Ride is, in my opinion, just that — once in a while (“Better service for Zelda,” editorial, June 1). Two examples from recent experience: My pickup was late which is not unusual, when he got here he did not speak any English. He spoke Chinese, yes and no. He was in a regular car and until he showed me his pass that said Access-A-Ride, I was not sure who he was. Only by pointing straight, left or right and over the Marine Parkway Bridge did I get to my destination.

My next trip to a doctor’s appointment did not happen at all. When I called, I was told that my ride had been outsourced to a private company. They connected me to the company where I was told that they were supposed to pick me up but they did not have a car for me! The arrangements for this trip were made two days before the ride was needed. I had to call the doctor and cancel the appointment. Two hours later, I received a phone call telling me they had a car for me.

One last thing. If you are in a private car instead of an Access-A-Ride van and have to go over a bridge such as Marine Parkway to Rockaway, they make you pay the toll or they will go on the parkway all the way to Far Rockaway to get to Rockaway Beach.

Something has to be done. Help!

Illegal immigration is a crime

Manhattan: Boy, just when I think the Daily News can’t get more outrageous, you guys outdo yourselves again (“Ice-holes,” June 7). Re the Pablo Villavicencio story, you report that “overzealous” federal agents are arresting immigrants “even if no crime.” Villavicencio seems like a nice enough guy, family man and all that, but isn’t being in this country illegally in itself a crime? You can’t pick and choose who should be arrested. ICE is doing its job. If you want to put a slant on things, the proper forum would be in your editorials, not actual news reportage. Your founder, Joseph M. Patterson, must be spinning in his grave. Carmine Coluccio

Help wanted

Bayonne, N.J.: Wanted: Pizza delivery man. Free delivery back to your country of origin. Please apply in person to ICE.

It was in there

Knoxville, Iowa: Why did you leave this part of the story out? Cathy SantoPietro, a spokeswoman for Fort Hamilton, said in an e-mail that Pablo Villavicencio signed a waiver allowing a background check when he went to obtain a day pass to the base. She said, “an active Immigration and Customs Enforcement warrant was discovered on file. This prompted the Department of Emergency Services personnel to contact the proper authorities. . . and released to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”

Ugly old associations

Brooklyn: By golly, the way my Asian neighbors are behaving toward admitting more blacks and Latinos in the specialized high schools is akin to the house Negroes versus the field Negroes. I guess they are the favored minorities. Geeze, what would MLK say? Would he believe this is 2018? I hate to think so.

The other schools

Manhattan: Lost in the specialized school admissions debate is the fact that these schools are not the only highly academic New York City public high school options. There are many very desirable selective NYC high schools that consider some combination of grades, interviews, extracurriculars, portfolios and their own tests for admissions and their grads go on to the same kinds of colleges the specialized school grads do. Subway rudeness

Cynthia Allen Kew Gardens: To the nasty group of African-American girls, who on June 7 were trying to push riders to the side of the stairwell of Union Turnpike subway station in Queens trying to get up the stairs: Your behavior is absolutely disgusting and goes to show this generation of children have no respect or manners whatsoever. You called a woman fat, coolie, bitch, slut, ho after she told you to stop pushing people. Then continued to yell at her and wanted to fight the woman after she went onto the train. You are an absolute scum. Just like African Americans don’t like being called the N-word, you never refer to someone as a “coolie” as it is offensive as well. You may never read this, but I hope you know the woman you called fat is pregnant. You are a disappointment to your parents and you should be ashamed of your behavior. Larissa Kane

How you judge freedom

Stamford, N.Y.: The Voice of the People headline for May 27 was “The NFL shuts down free speech.” Who in the hell would green light such an absolute 100% wrong headline? You, the media, wonder why so many people have dismissed your hyperbole as senseless blather. The NFL is saying if you choose to disrespect the symbol, in this case the American flag, which represents everything associated with freedom, we will penalize you. It is not saying you cannot say or do anything that constitutes free speech. It’s simply saying if you spit in Uncle Sam’s face, be prepared to face the consequences. Tom Freer

Missing info

Middle Village: Why is the Belmont horse racing not in the paper again? This happened once before. Having the racing in the paper is one of the reasons I have a subscription. What do I have to do — buy the Post for horse racing? You have every other sport in the paper; you just can’t keep out racing. What is the problem?

Forgetting our favorites

Yonkers: I have been a subscriber to the Daily News for at least a decade. Mostly enjoying the sports section. This week, however, I noticed many changes or downsizing as they call it. No longer are there any Belmont racing entries or results. Yonkers entries and results were removed a few years ago. No more “America’s Line” — Ecks & Bacon. No more “Mighty Quinn.” The Pitching Form by Benjamin Lee Eckstein was gone. The latest line, which replaced “America’s Line” was at the bottom of a page in small print as well the print was small in other areas — just too small for me with glasses. All these features may not be news, but they were enjoyable to me. I guess what the reader wants doesn’t count to the Daily News.

Where’d they go?

St. Petersburg, Fla.: Ok, enough is enough. Always thought you prided yourself as the best sports section in town but now you have decided to totally eliminate horse race coverage as well as not have enough room for Mighty Quinn or Ecks & Bacon’s little blurbs. Really? Why? Don’t your longtime readers deserve any explanation? Always thought the Post was second best but not anymore. Sayonara! Bill Barrett Mineola, L.I.: To Voicer Stephanie Crowder: Please know that “The Cosby Show” is indeed still being shown on cable TV; you steadfastly claimed was taken off the air. Even though I don’t care whether or not “Roseanne” is playing on TV, I ask that before you spew rhetoric on what’s good for the gander, please check your facts. As of today, on TV One on Verizon Fios, channel 771 not only is “The Cosby Show” being broadcast, it’s being shown for two hours straight back to back from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. I don’t know or care what cable company you subscribe to, but please stop with the “who deserves what” antics. Oh, and by the way, I’m Hispanic and gay, just so you know that I’m not being pro-white. It’s about facts. Period. Jeff Nieves

Here too

Flushing: To Voicer Stephanie Crowder: It seems you did not do your research either. Bill Cosby’s show is still on cable TV. It is on Time Warner Channel 90 TV1HD every Tuesday to Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

RON ANTONELLI/DAILY NEWS Elmont: To Voicer Stephanie Crowder: In response to your condescending letter. No research is necessary if you are capable of operating a remote! Just turn to channel 178 (TVONE on Optimum/Cable) and you will see “The Cosby Show” at 6:30 p.m. So, he is very much still on the air while Kevin Spacey has been turned into Claude Rains (“The Invisible Man,” in case you’re unaware)! Gone, please forget him

Brooklyn: Articles in the Daily News repeatedly refer to Louis Scarcella as a member of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club. He has not been a member for many years, probably close to 10 years. Please stop referring to the club in articles about him.
