Bounces going the Yanks’ way

- BY DANIEL POPPER

AS THE Mets dig themselves deeper and deeper into the depths of mediocrity, the Yankees, it seems, can do no wrong.

On Saturday, the Yankees lost their second starting pitcher of the week to injury when Masahiro Tanaka landed on the 10-day DL. Then young righthander Domingo German allowed two home runs in the first four batters against the Mets at Citi Field. Maybe this was the night the Yankees slipped up. Maybe this was the night the Mets ended their losing streak and bested their big brothers from the Bronx.

And yet, despite this swirling negativity, the type that usually only looms over the Mets, the Yankees found a way to win. A solo home run from 21-year-old rookie Gleyber Torres in the third. A game-tying two-run shot from 23-year-old rookie Miguel Andujar in the sixth. A go-ahead home run from Aaron Judge in the eighth. And eventually, a 4-3 victory.

The Yankees are 42-18 through 60 games and in sole possession of first place in the AL East.

“We got a really good team,” said Judge, who has no concern over the thumb sprain he suffered in Friday night’s win.

German allowed three base runners after the first. He struck out nine and didn’t allow a walk in six innings.

“The crowd was electric tonight. The fans were going crazy, especially in that first inning,” Judge said. “But he just didn’t seem fazed. He just came back in the dugout, sat down, did his normal routine, and went out there and did his thing for the next couple innings. It was impressive to watch.”

Added Aaron Boone: “Domingo just buckled down and did what he had to do to keep us in the game.”

The Yankees got three shutout innings from their bullpen — David Robertson in the seventh, Dellin Betances in the eighth and Aroldis Chapman in the ninth.

Since May 11, Betances has allowed just two hits in 12 innings. He’s struck out 19 batters.

“This is probably the best I’ve felt, ever,” Betances said.

Torres and Andujar have now combined for 19 home runs on the season — 10 of which either tied the game or put the Yankees ahead.

“(It’s) impressive just how mature they are,” Judge said. “They’re just having professional at-bats, working the count and coming up in big situations all year.… When the bottom of your lineup is getting on base and hitting home runs and driving people in, then who are you going to try to go after?”

Everything is coming up Yankees.
