Cashman said the Yankees are “leaning toward” a specific “internal option” to make that start, but they won’t make a decision until a few days from now. The Yankees lost another starter for the season earlier this week when lefthander Jordan Montgomery underwent Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow.

“I think we have an idea on what we’re gonna do,” Cashman said of Friday’s starter. “We’re not gonna deal with it now because things can change injury-wise or what have you.”

Luis Cessa will throw 60 pitches in a rehab assignment next week and could be an option. Meanwhile, 2014 first-round pick Justus Sheffield has pitched to a 2.96 ERA in six Triple-A starts this season.

“We’ll declare that ultimately when we have to,” Cashman said.

Boone and Cashman expressed some disbelief over Tanaka injuring both hamstrings on one play.

“That was surprising,” Cashman said.

“Not something you see every day, of course,” added Boone.

After this episode, Boone wouldn’t mind MLB extending the DH to both leagues.

“I’m probably a little hypocritical in that aspect because I’ve always been a fan of both and that’s kind of been my stance,” Boone said. “But being here where I am now, especially our team being set up to have a DH, yeah, I’d love that.”
