Girl charged with slays in SUV horror

- Bill Sanderson

STATE POLICE have brought manslaughter charges against a 15-year-old driver in a deadly car crash on Long Island’s Meadowbrook Parkway.

Cindy Sanchez — who is too young to get a driver’s license — faces three counts each of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, troopers said.

Three teens died and seven others were hurt when the SUV crashed about 11:40 a.m. Friday in a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer after it fishtailed and flipped on the parkway in Freeport.

David Sanchez, Cindy’s 13-year-old brother, was among the dead. Also killed were Marlon Carbajal, 15, and Herbert Leo Avilles-Maravilla, 16.

Cindy Sanchez’s 18-monthold daughter, Gael, was among the injured. Except for the toddler, the others injured in the crash were between the ages of 13 and 17.

The victims who were killed weren’t wearing seat belts and were ejected from the car, police said.

Sanchez, who fractured her left elbow in the crash, was due to be arraigned in Nassau County Family Court on Monday.

The car belonged to Carbajal’s father, William Carbajal, who reported it stolen from the driveway of his Uniondale home on Thursday night.

Sanchez was weaving in and out of traffic when the SUV swerved left and flipped over several times before coming to rest in a marshy area on the side of the highway, authorities said.
