Struggling Gonzo is released
THE Adrian Gonzalez experiment is over. After the 36-yearold first baseman went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in the Mets’ 2-0 win Sunday night over the Yankees, the Mets announced they were giving Gonzalez his unconditional release. Prospect Dominic Smith will be called up from Triple-A Las Vegas.
In 169 at-bats in 54 games, Gonzalez hit .237 with six HRs, 26 RBI and 34 K’s. He was signed in January as veteran wide of first. After initially calling Miguel Andujar out at second, the call was overturned upon a Yankees challenge. Robert Gsellman got out of the jam by retiring Gleyber Torres and Brett Gardener.
“I just missed the base,” Reyes said. “In that situation I have to touch the base and turn the double play. But Gsellman picked me up.”
