Slay rap in stab death of kind pal
A HOMELESS man was arrested for the fatal Manhattan stabbing of a 54-year-old man who had tried to give the suspect a helping hand, police sources said.
Police caught up with Ashraf Ahmed on Sunday, after an NYPD detective found him near a homeless encampment under the FDR Drive at E. 19th St.
Ahmed, who has no prior arrest record, was charged with murder and weapons possession for the slaying of Moses Ybarra.
A witness heard screams for help coming from Ybarra’s room at Friends House in Rose Hill on E. 29th St. early Saturday, according to a criminal complaint.
The witness, who saw Ahmed run out of the group home’s front door, then made a grisly find: Ybarra’s dead body in his bloodsoaked room, the complaint alleges. Ahmed was ordered held without bail after his arraignment in Manhattan court on Monday.
Ybarra’s distraught relatives said he had tried to get Ahmed to “walk a straight line” and lead a better life.
Police sources said Ahmed was Ybarra’s former roommate. But Ahmed’s family said the two never lived together.
