No Noah yet means 1 more shot for Seth
ATLANTA — Noah Syndergaard will miss another start, giving Seth Lugo another chance to earn a spot in the rotation.
Syndergaard was getting a second opinion on the strained ligament in his right index finger Tuesday.
“We want make sure that the next step that we take and he takes is the right one,” Mets GM Sandy Alderson said in a wide-ranging conference call with reporters Tuesday. “It’s not like he can suffer a permanent injury that is going to be career-threatening. But we want to make sure he isn’t out for any longer than he needs to be.”
That means Lugo will remain in the rotation, slotting in between Steven Matz on Thursday and Jason Vargas on Saturday against the Diamondbacks, Mets manager Mickey Callaway said.
Lugo has been crucial to the bullpen, so his success as a starter is stirring a debate within the organization.
“If he pitches six or seven like he did (Sunday) night, once he’s fully stretched out, getting six or seven innings out of him every five days as a starter may make more sense than getting two to four innings out of him every few days as a reliever,” Alderson said.
DON’T CALL IT A SETBACK
There is no timetable for Yoenis Cespedes after his last “lack of progress,” in rehab of his right quad injury.
“We’ve got to get that (soreness) out. So I can’t give you a best case scenario, I can’t give you a worst case scenario, but if it takes us a little while longer to get that out of there, then that’s what it is going to take,” Alderson said.
