6th cabbie suicide this year

-

A city cab driver was found dead in his Brooklyn home Friday — the sixth cabbie to commit suicide this year, according to the New York Taxi Workers Alliance.

Abdul Saleh, 59, a Yemeni immigrant who regularly put in 12 hours a day behind the wheel — was found hanged in his Flatlands apartment on King's Highway at 9 a.m., said Bhairavi Desai, director of the NYTWA.

“He should have been planning for retirement and rest after 30 years of serving the public and the city, but instead he was exhausted by the cruelty of ending each 12-hour workday with less in his pocket than the day before,” Desai explained.

Saleh drove a taxi at night, sharing a lease with a driving partner, according to the NYTWA. But Saleh was unable to make his share of the lease payments. In the past, he fell short $30 to $40, but in his last week driving, he was $300 short — and didn't take home any cash, Desai said.

His death follows the suicide of Yu Mein “Kenny” Chow, a taxi driver whose body was found in the East River after he vanished 11 days last month.
