B’klyn school board quits in protest

- BY BEN CHAPMAN

A Canarsie school board is in danger of failing after its president and a majority of members resigned in protest.

Six members of the District 22 Community Education Council — including former president Rajmatie Willabus — say they abruptly quit because of bullying on the board and a lack of support from the city Department of Education.

Their departure leaves the local school board — which was tasked with creating school zones among other important functions — unable to operate since it only has four members left —and that’s not enough to hold a vote.

Willabus, 42, a longtime education activist whose son attends third grade at a public school in District 22, said she and her fellow CEC members quit to sound an alarm.

“This is a statement to DOE that we need help,” Willabus said. “We have been begging them for support and they have been sweeping things under the rug.”

In a resignation letter she sent to schools Deputy Chancellor Yolanda Torres on Thursday, Willabus said the Education Department failed to provide her Council with basics, like an administrative assistant and materials for meetings.

She also said the Department did not intervene in vicious feuds between members of the Council.

“It is with great relief and regret that I submit my resignation,” Willabus wrote. “When I signed up to be a volunteer in this capacity, I never envisioned that any group could be comprised of members who held such a high degree of acrimony toward each other.”

She added: “Never have I encountered such a toxic environment!”

Willabus said she will not be returning to the CEC. She was appointed to a two-year term by the office of Borough President Eric Adams in July and was elected president of the council in August.

Education Department spokeswoman Miranda Barbot said the city will continue working with the CEC to address any concerns in the best interest of the students and families in this district.
