Cosby gets a new attorney
Bill Cosby’s new lawyer says the path to the disgraced comic’s sentencing in September will be arduous.
“I am looking forward to representing Mr. Cosby in post-verdict proceedings and at sentencing,” new attorney Joseph Green Jr. said in a statement Friday, a day after the comedian ousted the high-powered lawyers who mounted an aggressive defense at his sex assault re-trial in April.
“There are complicated legislative and constitutional issues unique to Pennsylvania law that have to be addressed prior to sentencing,” Green said. “I will make no further comment at this time.”
Cosby’s spokesman confirmed the departures of Los Angeles-based Tom Mesereau and Las Vegas lawyer Kathleen Bliss from the defense team on Thursday.
“The only comment I have is that we wish Mr. Cosby, his family and the new legal team the best," Mesereau told the Daily News, declining to elaborate.
Cosby, 80, has been under house arrest at his suburban Philadelphia mansion after a jury found him guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand back in 2004.
He faces up to 10 years in prison for each of three counts of aggravated indecent assault. His sentencing hearing is set for Sept. 24.
