The opioid crisis iscommon knowledge for American millennials.

More than four in ten millennials — 42% — said they personally know someone who has dealt with an opioid addiction, according to a new NBC News GenForward poll.

In the poll of 1,886 adults between ages 18 and 34, 17% knew someone in their immediate family who has been part of the epidemic and 25% knew someone outside of their family.

The survey, designed to be a nationally representative sample and conducted at the University of Chicago, revealed significant differences when it came to race, gender and political affiliation.

More than half — 54% — of white millennials knew someone with an opioid addiction.

Among AfricanAmerican millennials, 30% said they had personal knowledge of someone dealing with opioid addiction.
