City teachers to get paid parental leave
City teachers who become new parents will get six weeks’ paid family leave starting in September, Mayor de Blasio said Wednesday.
The announcement came after months of tense negotiations with the city teachers union, which had long pushed for paid leave for new parents.
The plan will pay a full salary and cover about 120,000 union members, including all teachers in the city’s district-run public schools.
It will cost $51 million and de Blasio said it will be paid for with savings generated by extending the current city teachers union contract by two months.
City officials said they expect about 4,000 people to take advantage of the new benefit each year.
De Blasio said the city’s old policy was unfair because it forced parents to use sick days to care for children.
Teachers union president Michael Mulgrew called the new policy a win for educators.
