Cash calls Mets ... & everyone

- BY PETER BOTTE

Brian Cashman already has engaged every club in baseball about available pitching help, including the Mets, because “that’s the job” as general manager of the Yankees.

That doesn’t mean anyone should be fitting Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard just yet for pinstripes, but Cashman has made it clear that he’s open to making a deal with any prospective seller before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

“I check in with everybody,” Cashman said by phone on Thursday, ahead of the Yanks’ first-place weekend showdown with the Red Sox. “Obviously, the job is to improve the team and attack our areas of weakness, and if I can do so in any way, I certainly hope to run into some matches with other clubs that I can make recommendations to our ownership.

“Clearly, that hasn’t happened yet, but we’re working at it, talking to clubs and seeing if it takes us somewhere.”

The Yanks also had a scout in attendance on Thursday to watch Tigers starter Michael Fulmer, according to the Detroit Free Press. Fulmer was the 2016 AL Rookie of the Year following a trade the previous summer from the Mets, involving Yoenis Cespedes.

Fulmer allowed four runs on nine hits over eight innings as Detroit lost 4-2 to Oakland, giving him a 4.20 ERA over 16 starts this season.

The Bombers had expressed interest over the offseason in the 25-yearold righty; Fulmer currently makes just $575,000 and won’t become a free agent until 2023.
