Selfish in the name of ‘Liberty’

-

BI understand Therese Patricia Okoumou’s right to protest (“Higher calling,” July 6). But what about all the families that were at the Statue of Liberty for a nice summer day trip, who lost all that time and money? I believe Oukoumou should be responsible for reimbursing all who lost money that day, or they should get together and file a class-action lawsuit against her. Secondly, she just gave information to potential terrorists, as she just did a dry run on a potential target and revealed law enforcement’s response to her actions.

What was the judge thinking, releasing that showboating woman without bail after she risked policemen’s lives, disrupted 4,500 people’s Fourth of July at the Statue of Liberty, and forced the closing of the symbol of our country? If she had pulled a stunt like that in the Democratic Republic of Congo, her punishment might have been more than a brief trip to jail. We will probably get to see her as a star on “American Ninja Warrior.” With the mindset of liberal judges, God help this country.

Tariff turnabout

North Arlington, N.J.: I recently read a couple of articles about how the print media wants the Trump administration to cancel tariffs it has imposed on newsprint from Canada. The print media claims that thousands of jobs will be lost in the newsroom if these tariffs are allowed to stand. I spent my entire working life as a member of a union; I certainly don’t want anyone to lose their jobs. However, I find it ironic that most of the print media had no problem siding with the preservation of a beetle or titmouse, even when it meant people would lose their jobs.

Finger pointing

Yonkers: If the Democrats hadn’t opposed the President since his campaign, maybe he would have picked a centrist Supreme Court justice. But with constant attacks on all his policies, the Democrats started this war and now are complaining about it. The Democrats offer no compromises, so why should he work with them?

Pruitt going Scott free?

Riverhead, L.I.: With Scott Pruitt under numerous federal investigations, the question on everyone’s minds should be whether President Trump will pardon him if he is found guilty of federal crimes. With the deep and unwavering devotion that Pruitt has for Trump, a pardon would be forthcoming without question if Pruitt is found guilty.

Cashing in

Manhattan: Who is making money by providing tents, cages, prisons, food, water, clothing, supervision, etc. to the 3,000 children separated from their parents? Donald Trump’s pals? How is the “zero tolerance” fiasco being financed?

Elton Don Trump

Mamaroneck, N.Y.: I read President Trump’s rant about Elton John from his speech Thursday night in Great Falls, Mont., and it convinced me that he’s been right all along about the fake news. What they had quoted him as saying was hilarious. I then went online to hear for myself what was said at the rally, and I was dumbfounded. What he said was verbatim what I had read in the news. If you haven’t read or heard it, you must. It is very revealing.

Donald dishing it out

Forest Hills: To all of you Voicers past, present and future, complaining about the Daily News or other Voicers disrespecting the office of the President: please stop. Donald Trump has disrespected the office since he started his campaign and continues to do so virtually on a daily basis. In addition to disrespecting our allies, he disrespects political opponents and anyone else who disagrees with him and does so in a thoroughly classless manner. Your thoughtless comments give me a headache every morning.

Leave Bill alone

Queens Village: Why is everyone only blaming Mayor de Blasio for the public housing crisis? Public housing is more than 80 years old. The mayor has only been in power for four-anda-half years. All that mess didn’t happen overnight. Tiesha Jones, who was on your front page on July 9, said that her daughter Dakota Taylor was diagnosed eight years ago with high blood-lead levels. Why is no one blaming Mike Bloomberg for some of the housing mess? He was in power for 12 long years. Please stop bashing my mayor. He’s one of the best mayors NYC has ever had.

Proud to be an American

Fishkill, N.Y.: To Voicer James D’Amico: I just wanted to say thank you. I have always been a proud American. It was a moment of weakness. It’s disturbing to see the greatest country in the world made to look so unreal and unpleasant. But though it’s heartbreaking, like D’Amico said, America is my country, and I’m extremely proud of her. Thank you.

‘Agents’ of the city

Fresh Meadows: The number of New York City public school educators who have chosen to be “agency fee payers,” a category that was eliminated as a result of the recent Supreme Court ruling in the Janus case, averaged less than one individual per school out of around 1,800 system-wide. These are the people who luxuriate in the benefits won by unions while refusing to contribute the membership dues used to fund the action necessary to secure them. The teachers union needn’t panic or be pushy to advertise their worth, because the quality of their product sells itself. But why would even a tiny percentage of educators gamble a career-dance on the quicksand of Janus? It’s not principle. It’s pathology.

Losing Lois

Levittown, L.I.: Where is Lois Lerner today, and what is she doing? She went on trial for allegedly targeting conservative groups at the Internal Revenue Service under the Obama administration. After pleading the Fifth Amendment in her opening statement, which flipped out the Senate committee,

MIRANDA NUNEZ MORENO she was placed on administrative leave. Amazingly, though, she was found not guilty of any wrongdoing and retired. “60 Minutes,” “20/20” or “Dateline” should do a special: “What happened to Lois Lerner?”

Let the fur fly

Seaford, L.I.: In response to Voicer Walter Blankinship’s letter urging people to wear fur, has this ignorant man ever seen how animals are raised and killed for their fur in fur farms? They are electrocuted anally and some skinned alive. We fight to end this cruel trade with petitions, demonstrations all over the world. We have perfectly good faux furs that don’t end up in a landfill. Many of the big fashion designers have now refused to use real fur after the exposure of these fur farms. I suggest he do some research before commenting on this torturous trade. These are living animals suffering so he and others can wear fur to impress their friends.

Breaking and separating

Hicksville, L.I.: Let me get this straight: If I rob a bank (which I know is illegal), I will be separated from my daughter. Yet an illegal can hop the border and should stay with his/hers?!
