Mets shut down Bruce for 10 days

- BY ZACHARY RIPPLE

After resuming baseball activities with an eye on returning to the Mets soon, outfielder Jay Bruce has instead been shut down.

The 31-year-old felt soreness in his right hip again – the same issue that originally landed Bruce on the disabled list June 19.

Mickey Callaway said before Tuesday’s game that Bruce initially felt the soreness over the weekend and was prescribed 10 days of rest.

Bruce, however, told the Daily News after the game that he received an injection in one of the facet joints in his back and will wait until after next week’s All-Star festivities before ramping up his rehab once again. “I had been progressing fairly well and though it was time to give it a try, see if we could get it going before the break,” Bruce said. “Just want to play it safe and get healthy.”

Bruce has had an injury-plagued return to the Mets this season. After dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot during the spring, the outfielder also missed time early in the regular season with the same issue.

CABRERA OK

Asdrubal Cabrera exited the game after the sixth inning after he reaggravated a hyperextended left elbow, but Callaway says he expects his second baseman to be in the lineup Wednesday. The Mets manager said it’s an injury that Cabrera has been dealing with for a few weeks now.

“He’s been battling it on and off, nothing he can’t play through at times,” Callaway said after Tuesday’s game. “Should be good to go tomorrow.”

Cabrera went 0-for-3 before taking his exit. He was replaced by Dom Smith in the lineup, with Wilmer Flores shifting to second base.

THOR TIME

Callaway said that Noah Syndergaard is on track to start Friday against the Nationals after making a rehab start for Class-A Brooklyn on Sunday as he works his way back from a strained ligament in his right index finger. The fire-balling right-hander, who has been sidelined since late May, made a rehab start for Class-A Brooklyn on Sunday as he works his way back from a strained ligament in his right index finger. He allowed just a run over five innings with seven strikeouts in the start.

NOTES

Michael Conforto was given the day off Tuesday...Jason Vargas made a rehab start for the Class-A Cyclones on Monday, but the Mets don’t have a defined timetable for the left-hander’s return.
