SMITH’S STRUGGLES
Callaway hinted that first baseman Dominic Smith could wind up back in the minor leagues if his poor play continues. “I think our main goal with Dom at this point — whether it is up here in the big leagues or in the minor leagues — is to develop him,” Callaway said. “We just need to constantly evaluate where he can get the best development.” Smith was not in the lineup Thursday but had a pinch-hit at-bat in the seventh inning, striking out. The Mets don’t have many first base options remaining after they released Adrian Gonzalez in June and shut down Jay Bruce following a rehab setback earlier this week. But the Mets’ 2013 first-round pick has failed to take advantage of his opportunities, hitting just .186 with a .537 OPS in 26 games.
