Q train route eases ride on Lexington line
The Second Avenue subway makes a Yankee Stadium's worth of difference to Upper East Siders' daily commutes, new MTA data show.
About 46,000 fewer people have used the Lexington Ave. 4, 5 and 6 trains on a typical weekday since the Second Ave. subway opened in January 2017, data released Friday says.
And about 69,000 people use the Second Ave. Q train, the fresh station-by-station ridership stats show.
Split the difference between those numbers, and the change is comparable to the 54,000 people who can fit into the stadium for a Yankees home game.
The Second Ave. subway's three new stations - at 72nd St., 86th St. and 96th St. - saw 69,017 swipes each day in its first year. And the data show that conditions on the 4, 5 and 6 trains are no longer as tight as a sardine can — ridership on the line is down 28%.
“These ridership numbers show how important MTA capital projects like Second Ave. Subway are to our customers,” MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota said in a statement.
“New Yorkers are quick to embrace new services, and the immediate popularity of the Second Avenue Subway proves that,” MTA NYC Transit President Andy Byford.
