Austin’s Little League homer helps Yanks beat Tribe after Aaron tossed

- BY MIKE MAZZEO

CLEVELAND – It wasn’t an actual homer that won it for the Yankees on Saturday night. It was a Little League homer. Austin Romine should’ve had a leadoff double in the seventh inning, but Romine was able to come around to score on the same play due to a pair of Indians errors, the difference in the Bombers’ 5-4 victory over Cleveland at Progressive Field. It guarantees a winning road trip for the Yankees (6-4) as they kept pace with the Red Sox in the AL East (3.5 games back)

Aaron Boone was ejected for the second time as manager of the Yankees for arguing a call in the sixth. Leadoff hitter Giancarlo Stanton swung through a strike-three pitch that hit him in the hand. Boone appeared to argue that it was a foul ball. Boone got his money’s worth, yelling more than a few profanities at the umpiring crew.

CC Sabathia went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits. But Sabathia could only leave the mound annoyed and in disbelief after Brandon Guyer’s infield single to third produced a pair of runs that tied the game at 4-4.

Didi Gregorius got the Yankees an early lead when he belted a threerun homer (No. 17) in the first. Greg Bird cracked his eighth homer of the season with two outs in the sixth to make it 4-2. Bird now has an eightgame hitting streak.
