GOPer’s tip: No minimum wage boost
The GOP candidate for governor, Marcus Molinaro, blasted a proposal being considered by Gov. Cuomo to end the separate minimum wage for workers who get tips.
Cuomo ordered a series of hearings late last year to explore the possibility of ending the tip credit, which allows businesses like restaurants, car washes and nail salons to pay less than the regular minimum wage, as long as workers make up the difference in tips.
Molinaro (photo) , the Dutchess County executive, charged Cuomo's move was “nothing more than him attempting to outmaneuver his Democrat opponent in the Democratic primary.”
Cuomo is facing a primary challenge from the left from actress and activist Cynthia Nixon.
His GOP challenger said eliminating the tipped wage will end up hurting waiters and bartenders, who with tips can make more than minimum wage workers, as well as small businesses.
“Trump acolyte Molinaro's open hostility towards hardworking men and women across the state is clear given he's voted for wage theft and to protect wage discrimination," said Cuomo campaign spokeswoman Abbey Collins
“The difference couldn't be more stark – Gov. Cuomo stands on the side or hardworking men and women across this state, while Molinaro continues his attack on the working and middle class.”
