Knicks trim roster, cut wing man

- BY STEFAN BONDY

The Knicks trimmed their roster to regulation on Monday, cutting Troy Williams despite being thin at his wing position.

Williams, 23, was on a non-guaranteed deal which made him the most obvious candidate for the waiver wire. The Knicks now have 15 players under NBA contracts and two others on two-way contracts — the maximums for opening night.

If they don’t make another move, the Knicks now don’t have to rush into a decision regarding Joakim Noah. They can fit him into the roster — whether he actually joins the team or not — and wait for a better buyout number or a trade partner.

After Sept. 1, the Knicks can save about $12 million in cap space for 2019 by waiving and stretching Noah. However, the dead money stays on the books for more years — just at a lesser number per — and the Knicks would rather trade him for an expiring deal.

Williams was signed last season on successive 10day contracts in February before sticking for the remainder. His contract included a team option for 2018-19.

The 6-7 wing is a high flyer and injected muchneeded athleticism into the Knicks at the end of last season. He played 17 games — starting once — and averaged 7.5 points on 49 percent shooting over 17.1 minutes. Williams also played five games in Summer League for the Knicks this month, demonstrating his penchant for fast pace and high flying.

But he’s also played for three different teams since going undrafted out of Indiana in 2016.

Given the composition of the roster, the Knicks would’ve been better off cutting a guard but Ron Baker, who is still recovering from shoulder surgery, is guaranteed $4.5 million next season, and Damyean Dotson is guaranteed $1.4 million as last year’s second-round pick.
