Jets waive oft-injured WR Devin Smith

-

Devin Smith’s injury-ridden Jets tenure is over.

The Jets waived the former second-round pick, the team announced Monday, while signing safety Brandon Bryant in a corresponding move. Smith suffered two torn ACLs in the same knee after the Jets selected him with the No. 37 overall pick in 2015.

The 6-1 wide receiver caught just 10 passes for 31 yards in 14 games over his three years with Gang Green.

Smith dealt with injuries from the very beginning of his NFL career, and never really proved capable of staying on the field. As a rookie in 2015, Smith sustained broken ribs and a punctured lung on the second full day of training camp, an injury that forced him to miss the remainder of the summer and the first month of the regular season.

He made his debut on Sept. 27 of that year, but less than three months later, he tore the ACL in his right knee in a home game against the Titans. Smith would miss the remainder of 2015 and wouldn’t return to the field until December of 2016. He played the final four games of that season, catching one pass.

Then in April of 2017, while working out at the Jets’ facility in Florham Park in preparation for spring practices, Smith tore the same ACL for a second time. He sat out all of last season and was not ready to participate in OTAs or mandatory minicamp this spring.

The Jets save a little more than $1.2 million in cap space by cutting Smith, who was a long shot to make the 53-man roster given the team’s crowded wide-receiver room. Daniel Popper

CUP PROTESTERS GET JAIL TIME

The four protesters who barged onto the field at the World Cup final in Moscow have been sentenced to 15 days in jail.

The protesters, members of the Pussy Riot punk collective, ran onto the pitch at Luzhniki Stadium dressed as police officers during the second half of Sunday’s match between France and Croatia. They called for the release of political prisoners and for more open political competition.

A court on Monday sentenced them after finding them guilty of violating the law on behavior of sports events spectators. They were also banned from attending sports events for three years.

NHL GOALIE'S DEATH NOT SUSPICIOUS: POLICE

The drowning of former NHL goalie Ray Emery does not appear suspicious, police said.

The 35-year-old player, whose career spanned 11 seasons, drowned in Hamilton Harbour on Sunday.

He jumped off a boat near the Leander Boat Club to go swimming, and friends called emergency services at about 6 a.m. when he didn’t resurface, police said. Inspector Marty Schulenberg called it a “case of misadventure.”
