Nixon’s the one calling to impeach

- BY KENNETH LOVETT

ALBANY — Actress Cynthia Nixon called for President Trump’s impeachment Tuesday while bashing Gov. Cuomo, her Democratic primary foe, for failing to do so.

Nixon’s support of impeachment came a day after Trump sided with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the U.S. intelligence community’s finding that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

“Trump should be impeached. Trust the American people, not Republican senators to make it happen,” Nixon tweeted minutes after Cuomo demurred when asked on a conference call with reporters whether he believes Trump should be impeached or censured.

Cuomo said he believes Trump crossed a line, but said “I’ll leave it to the Republican Senate and the Republican Congress” on whether he should be impeached or censured.

He did hit the GOP for not standing up in unison to condemn Trump’s statements.

But later in the call — after Nixon’s tweet posted — he returned to the subject without being asked.

“I think (the Republicans in Congress are) going to have a real issue as to whether or not the President’s actions were treasonous and whether or not they’re going to pursue the President’s actions as possible treason, which has been suggested by Republican officials,” Cuomo said.

“That’s going to be the question for this Congress. Are they going to pursue the President for possibly committing treason or not. And they’ll be accountable to the people in November for that decision,” he added.

Cuomo said there are times when politicians have to put their responsibility to the citizenry above political loyalty.

“After (Monday), they’re also going have to explain why they didn’t pursue this President, if they don’t, for treason after many Republicans suggested it was treasonous. Once again, they will put party loyalty ahead of loyalty to the citizenry.”
