Man unfit for trial in hammer slay
A man who snatched a Brooklyn neighbor from her apartment and beat her to death with a hammer was found mentally unfit Tuesday to stand trial.
Ryan Wilson, 32, was indicted on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Gladys Byers, 68.
Wilson allegedly went berserk with a hammer and smashed the windows of a Honda Accord, a Dodge pickup and a Dodge Durango along Herkimer St. outside the apartment building where he and Byers lived.
He then broke into Byers’ apartment and slammed the naked woman in the head three times with the hammer before grabbing her by her feet and dragging her down the stairs, according to a criminal complaint.
When police arrived, they found Wilson in his apartment, where he was holding a knife and a hammer dripping in blood, according to the complaint.
At Wilson’s arraignment last month, the judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation. He is scheduled for arraignment in Brooklyn Supreme Court Aug. 3. He’ll be confined to a psychiatric hospital until he is found fit for trial, if he ever is.
