BREAKING NEWS: July 2018

Special Report for Parents who live in NYCHA Housing in the Five Boroughs of New York City.

The Daily News and the New York Times have just reported that 820 children have been poisoned by exposure to toxic paint in the New York City Housing Authority buildings.

820 children under the age of 6 were found to have elevated levels of lead in their blood between 20122016. What they didn’t report is from 2016 till now. You might be asking yourself “What’s the big deal? So what if these kids were found to have elevated lead levels in their blood?” It is a big deal and here’s why… Walls that were painted with paint containing poisonous lead eventually develop paint flakes or paint chips that fall off the wall and onto the floor. Young kids and babies eat these flakes from the floor. Doctors even have a name for this called ‘Pica’. There’s a sweetness to these paint flakes that compels kids to continue eating this dangerous substance.

Babies and young children’s brains develop rapidly. When a baby or a child eats these paint chips and paint flakes, the lead in this paint replaces the calcium needed for developing brain function. Doctors have known for years that eating lead-based paint chips stunts a child’s intellectual growth. Lead poisoning is also attributed to cardiovascular problems, hormone problems and immune system problems.

According to the news reports, children’s exposure to lead paint in NYC Housing wasn’t a one-time thing. This was a systematic use of toxic paint used throughout the New York City Housing Projects for many years.

Did you know that the NYC Housing Authority has now ADMITTED in court documents: (1) That lead paint existed in ‘at least’ 92 out of its 325 housing developments,

(2) That NYCHA FAILED to inspect for lead paint hazards from ‘at least’ 2012-2016,

(3) That NYCHA FAILED to ensure staff was appropriately trained to fix the known toxic lead paint problem. Was your child exposed to lead paint? Does your child have elevated levels of lead that might impair his brain function?

Has your child exhibited developmental problems that you can’t explain?
