Bombers’ addition of Britton means more pride in Washington Heights

-

There was a ripple of pride through Washington Heights when it was announced that the Yankees had pulled off a trade for closer Zach Britton. Known as the Little Dominican Republic, the Yankees were getting one of the family. Yup, Britton, is a proud Dominican.

“My mom is Dominican. I know I don’t look like it, but I am Dominican,” said Britton with a laugh. “I have a lot of family there, they are all Yankee fans and about as excited as can be for me to be here. My mother is Dominican... I am Dominican, I don’t speak Spanish, but yeah, that’s an interesting story.”

Of course there are plenty of other reasons for Yankee fans to be happy with the deal. The elite

closer adds depth to the back end of the bullpen that is hard to beat and in particular gives the Yankees a weapon against the Red Sox’s powerful lineup and in a potential Wild-Card playoff game against the Mariners and A’s lefty-hitting sluggers.

Thursday night, Britton threw 10 pitches in a perfect eighth as the Yankees beat the Royals, 7-2.

With four closers in the pen, including lefty Aroldis Chapman, Britton made it immediately clear that he is fine with whatever role Aaron Boone asks of him.

“Yes, I spoke with Aaron and I just kind of told him, I am ready for whatever situation he wants to use me in,” Britton said.

DOMINGO HURT

Yankees pitching prospect Domingo German left a Triple-A game Thursday with what the team believes to be a biceps issue. According to Conor Foley of the Times-Tribune in Scranton, German threw one pitch in the second inning and then pointed to his elbow.

“Domingo German was pitching today and had to leave in the second inning with biceps tendinitis or something,” GM Brian Cashman said.
