What #MeToo means now

-

The #MeToo movement has delivered an overdue comeuppance to many powerful men, upending decades in which women's claims of indignities and even assaults were ignored. Left unresolved: How to navigate the brave new world. It is easy to say credible accusations should carry career consequences; it is harder to determine what “credible” means, and which consequences fit which misconduct.

Most crucial is swift and serious digging into claims by independent investigators.

Friday, even before New Yorker published a thoroughly documented expose detailing chronic sexual harassment by CBS chairman Les Moonves, the network launched a probe. It must determine who if anyone at the company aided and abetted the boss — leaving Ronan Farrow to discover what CBS should have rooted out long ago.

In the meantime, Moonves should be suspended. Even though belatedly, even if only out of fear of bad publicity, the private sector is wrestling with its sins.

Then there's Albany. In January, Erica Vladimer, a former aide to state Sen. Jeff Klein, alleged he had forcibly kissed her outside a bar. More than six months after she went public and four and a half months after the state's ethics watchdog, JCOPE, began its investigative process, nobody knows nothing.

Will a report be unveiled at JCOPE's bimonthly meeting Tuesday? Stop laughing.
